Where is Anode Rod on A.O Smith Water Heater?

The anode rod  in your A.O. Smith brand water heater is located on top of your tank. When you are facing the front of your water heater, the sacrificial magnesium or aluminum anode is located at the back, between the cold and hot water connections. Refer to your water heater’s user guide for more information.

My AO Smith water heater has 2 anode rods. I bought a powered rod from you guys and noticed this during the install. Do I need to remove the other anode rod?

Hello Christian, you don’t need to remove the second anode rod.

I don’t see the anode on top of my hybrid AO Smith water heater. Do I need to remove the top to access it?

This is possible; some models show that the anode is located under the top of the tank. You can also refer to the owner manual to easily find it.

Can I remove the anode rod if it keeps smelling like rotten eggs after a while

Jeff, removing the magnesium anode rod will reduce the life of your tank since it’s the only protection you have against corrosion. We suggest replacing the anode with a Corro-Protec powered anode rod.
